Hong Kong

Hong Kong, a Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China has a population of 14 million, and consists of four main areas - Hong Kong Island, Kowloon Peninsula, the New Territories and the Outlying Islands. Hong Kong Island is densely populated and is the centre of economy, politics, entertainment and shopping, whereas Kowloon Peninsula forms the southern part of the main landmass. Kowloon has its own skyline of sky scrapers alongside lush green rolling hills. There are plenty of markets to visit especially The Jade Market in Yau Ma Tei, which has 400 stalls to choose from. The New Territories and Outlying Islands are ideal places to experience a peaceful and natural Hong Kong.

The climate in Hong Kong is sub-tropical and the best time to travel is during November and December as the weather is usually sunny with pleasant breezes. January / February can be very cold and May through to August tends to be hot and humid with showers and thunderstorms. From July to September there’s a high risk of tropical cyclones.

Hong Kong is buzzing with open air markets, and overlooking the opulent hotels, international banks, towering skyscrapers and futuristic buildings of the city is the jade green pinnacle of Victoria Peak, a beautiful, lavish, mainly residential area with breathtaking views. A popular attraction is the Peak Tram which takes you 552m above sea level to see all of Hong Kong’s jumbled beauty.

Victoria Harbour (also called the “Fragrant Harbour”) is famous for its spectacular panoramic views, and is in itself a top tourist attraction. Visitors to Hong Kong must make time to witness the “Symphony of Lights” which can be viewed on the waterfront promenades, or by harbour cruise for the best view. Visit one of the museums such as the Hong Kong Museum of History, Art, Science and Space.

Must sees include Man Mao Temple, which is one of the oldest and most unusual temples in Hong Kong; the Buddhist complex of Mui Fat Monastery in Lam Tei, surrounded by beautiful gardens; wander through Sheung Wan and the Western District (Chinatown) and Central Plaza, and experience Ocean Park, South East Asia’s largest amusement park.

The Island of Lantau is home to the Po Lin Monasteries and the Big Buddha, the world’s largest bronze Buddha situated in the Ngong Ping Plateau. Reaching this majestic monument takes a 268 step climb. It took 10 years to complete and was revealed in 1993. Lantau is situated at the mouth of the Pearl Delta River, “The Gateway to China”, and connects Hong Kong, Macau and Guangdong Province where you can witness old and new China. Visit on a day trip from Hong Kong.
